Ryan 'Rink' Mansfield Updates
Date/Time Information
2008-11-12 @ 22:04:00 [From Squirrel]

This was emailed to me by Dona, so I thought I would share it w/ all of you to update you. (Sorry I was in Vegas durring PBR Finals for a couple weeks and got out of the loop.
) I talked to Rink while I was in Vegas, and on the way home, but am waiting for my callback!

For those of you who are new..... Ryan Mansifield (Rink) a friend to all who know him was paralized this summer ride'n bulls in Oklahoma City, and is now at Harborview in Seattle. There is more to the story, but just go read it in my blog..... Email and Update Below:

Hi, everyone....I just spent two days and nites with Ryan. Not much sleep but that is what hospitals do.

I don't think I told you last time that discharge date has been slid to Dec 2. Subject to change.

Kyrie took Ace to visit last weekend and Ryan was delighted. Somewhat traumatic for Ace as everything is new. That will smooth over with time. He will be going to visit on Thanksgiving day and at that time can go in to Ryan's room. Needs more vaccinations to make him legal to hospital regs.

Kyrie and Kenny exchanging info and ideas for training.

Kenny shaves Ryan every Sunday and Kenny looks forward to"their" time together.

I have had a serious discussion with Drs. about pain management. They are very aware of how seriously it inhibits his rehab. Seems that with spinal cord injury pain just above the injury is very common and each one another challenge. In Ryan's case the pain all occurs in shoulder (primarily left), and neck area. It is being addressed but no solutions found as yet. Medicating can be overdone, causing other problems. Adjusting meds is being tried, heat, ice, breathing therapy.....When I suggested accupuncture it was explained to me that Harborview does not use that discipline but is certainly an option for later. Also massage therapy and hypnosis.

Meantime, he is learning more about his injury, how to direct others to care for him, and driving that power chair is becoming easier with practice. OT and PT. Also does some time with rehab psychs.

Kathy is working with hospital staff to locate adequate housing, hoping to be ready for Dec 2. If that doesn't work out there are other options that could be implemented for however long it is needed. Care facilities, group home settings, etc.

Don is shopping for options in selecting a van for transport. More big bucks.

I know I am forgetting something but this is all for now. Oops, Kathy is planning to take Thanksgiving dinner to Ryan's room.

Bye, Mom/Gramma/Dona Carolene

I re-posted this from his cousin.... I am getting everything ready to depart for the PBR Finals and am waiting for my truck to get fixed... so I've been truckless for a few days.
(Hit a gate at the hockey game)

Here's the bulletin: (all of you who are part of the group.... he really needs your faces to help him smile!!!!)

If anyone can help fill in some time at the hospital at anytime, PLEASE call Ryan's phone and let them know if you can OR can't (either way).

This weekend still needs to be filled as his Mom will be out of town. I can be there anytime this weekend, but would like to coordinate with someone?????? Please, let me know.

Just a visit for a couple of hours or however long is a big help too!

Also, he had a bone scan on his shoulder this morning as it has been causing him great pain so please pray for good test results.

Thanks!
Love to all and to all a Good Day,
Tami
2008-10-16 @ 10:54:00 [From an update sent to Squirrel]

Hi, everyone! I was able to be with Ryan on Mon & Tues this week Tami took over this afternoon and Kody will be there later. He really perks up when the younger folks drop in, even if for only a short time.

Monday went well, he is up to three hours+ in the wheelchair each day. His bp tends top drop but there are remedies for that, just be vigilant.

Tuesday was not a good day....upset stomach, dizzyness, you name it. Change of meds seems to have remedied that but again, lots of challenges.Therapy continuing daily, and the regime will become more rigorous as the days roll by.

A nutritionist came in today with lots of help with selecting better tasting food from the hospital. Meantime, Tami brought Jack in the Box tacos and a milkshake. That was very well received!! So maybe he will feel more like eating after learning what to select and what other choices are available. Right now he needs to consume lots of protein so his skin will heal, and he could stand to gain back a few pounds from healthy foods.

I found the cafeteria food atrocious. Enough said about that.

Phone calls are a tough call. I know that everyone wants to know how he is doing, but most of the time, at least right now, he is either busy or very, very tired and needing to rest. So please be patient about that. When I am there, I am happy to talk to you and give the phone to Ryan if the time is right.

Parking is a nightmare....very expensive in the garage. On the street if you can find a spot, two hours free. Suggest evenings or weekends. Also, there is no therapy during those times which leaves his time free.

All for now, Mom/Gramma/Dona Carolene

This is a re-post for any of you who want a address for Ryan. Not many use snailmail anymore, but if you have a card or whatever.... (he would probably like a stripper!) ...anyways I thought I would pass it on to you.

He is at Harborview now, so Seattle is close to many of you!
BELLOW IS THE RE-POST (thanks Pat!)
Hello to everyone,

Here is an address for anyone that would like to send Ryan a note.

They are working his butt off in physical therapy. He had a rough day today. Sick to his stomach, etc. caused from some of the meds.

This came to my real email and I thought I would pass it on to all of you:

Hi, everyone.....As of yesterday, Thursday, Ryan will leave Oklahoma on Monday morning. The way things have been going I would say that plan is subject to change.

Kathy will return to Washington in Ryan's car with Gabe's help, and bring Ace to Kyrie's house for TLC.

Ryan has requested that I be at Harborview when he arrives and I plan to do that. He will be in ICU, hopefully for just a short time. I am sure the trip will be difficult for him and he will be exhausted. Also, he does not like to be alone. Simple things like a sip of water, scratch my chin, move the shoulders, hospital staff can't do it all.

I will be counting on all of you to help with covering those tasks. I do not have the stamina I once had. Of course Kathy is deserving of help from all of us and she needs some R&R time, too.

There will be lots of opportunity in the weeks ahead to drop in, stay a while if it seems appropriate. Ryan has his work cut out for him and he has made it very clear that he NEEDS lots of support. Prayers help a lot, too. (Maybe I should have put that at the top).

Please let me know that you have received this note, and pass it on to anyone else you can think of who might be interested.

Thanks, Mom/Gramma/Dona Carolene

(Hot Shotz is in Bellingham, WA.)

So I'm still working on more detais, but Brenda the Owner of "Hot Shotz" (IN BELLINGHAM, WA.) is not just donating a percentage of the bar, but NOW they are donating a Ultimate Jagermeister Shot Machine!!!! (it will be raffled off that night)

I'm sure you have seen my updates on Ryan in my bulletins and the whole story, but if not He was paralized riding bulls in Oklahoma City. This particular rodeo was not a PRCA rodeo so he has no ins. coverage for this. AN OLD FRIEND OF OUR ROB HAS found a wheelchair through a friend that has less than 45 min. on it. IT IS A $37,000 chair that we can get for $2,000 if we come up w/ it RIGHT AWAY.

This is no fancy long planned fund raiser, but a last min. quick "We need to help and help fast!" event. There is talk of much bigger plans such as a auction; rodeo, etc. but for now we need to secure this chair!

We are bringing in the mech. bull...... and the owner of the bar is donating a percentage of the bars income to Ryan... here's the catch: THE MORE THEY MAKE... THE HIGHER THE PERCENTAGE! PLEASE GET EVERYONE OUT FOR THIS NIGHT ...... PLEASE

Thank you,
Squirrel

Only have a quick min, but it's a go.

Saturday October 4th we are bringing in the bull to Hot Shotz in Bellingham. It's a bar so 21+ only.

Nothing fancy because we are in a hurry to raise $2,000 for a $37,000 chair that Rob has located that has LESS THAN 45 MIN. ON IT!

So the short of it is all the money from the mech. bull and 15%+ from the bar sales will go towards this chair.

WE NEED EVERYONE TO SPREAD THE WORD PLEASE! If there is ever a time to go hang out w/ friends and have a couple drinks ...ride a bull...THIS IS IT!

$5.00 is the usual cover charge, but if you throw down more.... I'm betting we can get that to Ryan!

I will come up w/ more details later for you so stand by, BUT PLEASE START SPREADING THE WORD!!!

~~~~~~~~~~AND.... LOOKS LIKE THEY ARE BRINGING HIM TO HARBORVIEW W/IN A WEEK!!!!!!!!! (and even though we are going to get him this chair... HE WILL GET OUT OF IT AND BE WALKING!!!!!!!!! just needs a bit more time!!!!!!)
If you are a friend of Rodeo, or just "Good Folk" you would have been friends w/ Ryan if you had the lucky opp. to cross paths...... so...... I am asking all of you as a friend to help :)
2008-09-24 @ 12:38:00 [From Squirrel]
I only have a quick min. and have to go, but I wanted to ask opinions from all of you who are around here.....
We start the mechanical bull back up at Hot Shotz on the 4th of October (Saturday nt.) I would like to do that night as a fundraiser where all the $$$$ from the bull along with a % of the profits from the bar go to my Friend Ryan Mansfield (YOU'VE PROBABLY SEEN THE BULLETINS) but he was paralized in a bull riding accident while in Oklahoma City, and is still in the Hospital.
ROB has found a $37,000 wheelchair for him that has less than 10 hours on it. If we can come up with $2,000 quick we can get it for Ryan.
If we do this, can I count on the people of Whatcom County to help out a friend of mine who I charish? ...not all of you know him, but probably have seen him ride at the Lynden PRCA Rodeo and many years at the Sumas Bull-O-Ramma. Please let me know if you would be willing to come, along w/ SPREAD THE WORD. It will depend on your response on if we do this.
Many emails in my inbox right now so I'll get back to you asap.
THANK YOU,
Squirrel (who was given that name from Ryan!)
